Position Overview
The Orthodontic Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) plays a key role in supporting the orthodontist and clinical team by delivering high-quality patient care, assisting with procedures, and maintaining efficient clinical operations. This position requires clinical skill, attention to detail, and excellent patient communication to ensure a positive and effective treatment experience.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
1. Clinical Support & Chairside Assistance
- Prepare treatment rooms, instruments, and materials for orthodontic procedures
- Assist the orthodontist during bonding, debonding, wire changes, impressions, and other chairside procedures
- Take and pour impressions, fabricate retainers, and perform other lab duties as needed
- Take intraoral and extraoral photographs, panoramic X-rays, and CBCT scans when required
- Place and remove orthodontic brackets, bands, separators, and archwires as directed (per provincial regulations)
- Prepare and cement bands, deliver aligners, and provide oral hygiene instructions
- Perform minor adjustments under orthodontist supervision (as permitted by scope of practice)
2. Patient Care & Communication
- Greet and seat patients, ensuring comfort and reassurance throughout the visit
- Educate patients and parents on proper oral hygiene, appliance care, and treatment expectations
- Communicate treatment progress clearly and document clinical notes accurately
- Provide post-procedure instructions and ensure understanding before patient dismissal
- Support emergency care when needed (loose brackets, broken wires, etc.)
3. Records & Documentation
- Capture diagnostic records, including photos, X-rays, and intraoral scans
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date charting and treatment notes in the electronic system
- Ensure proper labeling, uploading, and organization of digital records
- Assist with model trimming, scanning, and file management for lab submissions
4. Infection Control & Sterilization
- Maintain strict compliance with infection control and sterilization protocols
- Clean, disinfect, and reset treatment areas between patients
- Monitor inventory of clinical supplies and notify the lead assistant or manager when restocking is needed
- Ensure sterilization logs, spore testing, and autoclave maintenance are completed per protocol
5. Team & Clinic Support
- Collaborate with orthodontists, hygienists, and administrative staff to ensure efficient daily flow
- Help manage patient scheduling and communicate effectively with the front desk
- Participate in morning huddles, team meetings, and continuing education as required
- Support onboarding and mentorship of new clinical team members or externs
- Assist with maintaining clinic cleanliness, readiness, and professional presentation
Qualifications
- Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) designation and license in good standing
- CPR and radiation safety certification (as applicable)
- Prior orthodontic experience preferred (training available for the right candidate)
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Compassionate, detail-oriented, and team-focused personality
Position Details
- Full-time/Part-time position
- Reports to: Orthodontist / Clinical Lead
- Compensation: Based on experience and certification level
